If you’ve used Speedplay pedals for any length of time, you’re probably familiar with their downsides—one of the most frustrating being the so-called “walkable” covers that don’t stay put when you actually walk. But that’s just part of the compromise for the exceptional adjustability they offer, with independently tunable float, fore/aft positioning, and lateral adjustments.These aftermarket cleats provide a cost-effective alternative to the official versions. They function similarly—though not quite as precisely—and unfortunately share the same weaknesses, as they closely replicate the original design.Personally, I’ve never had difficulty clipping in and prefer a tight release to avoid accidental disengagement, so these have worked fine for me. I have noticed users of other 3rd party cleats mentioning filing down the edges slightly for smoother entry, which could be a helpful modification for those who find them tricky to engage. The stock cleat springs are stamped just like these though, so its not like there is a big difference in manufacturing, although if you look at each face of the cleat you can see one side had more rounded edges than the other.I’ll admit I’ve been guilty of using my cleats past their prime, which has led to extra wear and more movement in the pedal-cleat connection over time. Thankfully, Wahoo’s updates—like the stainless steel reinforcement on the pedal body—help reduce wear on that end. And with budget-friendly cleats like these available, I won’t feel the need to extend their lifespan beyond what’s reasonable.Previously, Speedplay was known for aggressively protecting its designs against third-party competition, but I’m hopeful that under Wahoo’s ownership, they’ll ease up on that. The Speedplay system is one of the best from a bike-fitting perspective, and greater accessibility would be a win for cyclists everywhere.
